Don’t Joke About Tauntaun Sleeping Bags

The company has now decided to try to bring it to life for real–if the suits at Lucasfilms will grant them a license.

Dear god, please make these in adult sizes.

Slashdot Developers Story | Tech Or Management Beyond Age 39?

Interesting and relevant to my interests. I’m the same age as the poster. I think I can get away with being a front line tech for some time yet, as I look like I’m 25, but it makes me think….

So here I am at age 39 with two contractual possibilities, for practically the same pay. With one, I continue being a techie for the foreseeable future — always having to keep myself up-to-date on everything tech and re-inventing myself with each Web.x release to stay on top. With the other, I’m being offered a chance to get into management, something I also enjoy doing and am seriously considering for the rest of my working life. The issue here is the age of my grey matter. Will I still be employable in tech at this age and beyond? Or should I relinquish the struggle to keep up with progress and take the comfy ‘old man’ management route so that I can stay employable even in my twilight years? What would Slashdot veterans advise at this age?

Young Republican Leader Finds Racism LOL-Worthy

First of all, why is a vice chairwoman of the Young Republicans 38 years old? And secondly, why is she “lol”-ing at racist Facebook comments? Oh, right, because she is a vice chairwoman of the Young Republicans.

Opera Unite

Well, Here’s an interesting idea. Opera has updated their browser with a significant amount of functionality. You can now use it as a web server, media player, custom chat room and file  sharing client.

To be clear, it does not connect you to chat or file services like Bear share or Yahoo messenger. Your running your OWN web accessable server for these services. It’s pretty nifty.

For the web server piece, it appears to handle DNS and other behind the scenes ickieness for you. Once you turn the service on, the opera client registers with Operas servers and they handle the routing for you. You will wind up with a real URL to hand out without having to pay anyone for anything. It’s not a professional grade server by any means and is unable to run PHP and other services (No WordPress >.<) but the ease of use for low volume stuff is unmatched.

the statement on the front page says: “Share your stuff with your friends over the Web without handing it over to anyone else — total privacy and complete control. We are changing the game.” and if it works as promised, it just might make a dent.

*WARNING* still in Alpha. Your experience may change as you go. I have the web server set up on my PC at my job and it’s not entirely working. Considering the number of firewalls and NAT connections between me and Operas servers, its not all that surprising. In fact,I would have been shocked if it had worked.
