Unless you’ve recently arrived in 2009 on a time machine, you know that smoking isn’t good for you. Did you know, however, that smoking isn’t good for your computer, either? It’s true, at least according to Apple. Two readers in different parts of the country claim that their Applecare warranties were voided due to second hand smoke. Both readers appealed their cases up to the office of God Steve Jobs himself. Both lost.

Frankly, I’m with Apple on this one. I used to repair computers in an industrial environment and the machines off the factory floor were nothing compared to the smokers machines I have seen. You computer has a fan in it to ventilate the heat. This means that it sucks in the air around it and blows that air over the delicate electronics inside. With smokers, this coats everything with smoke tar. Opening one of these computers is like putting your face in an ashtray and blowing.

Google had a low-key event today to preview Chrome OS, its new operating system based on Linux and the Chrome browser. Things are still pretty early — it’s not even in beta yet, let alone on shipping products — but that’s the first official screen shot right there

Somewhat disappointed it wont run on anything with a standard hard disk, but as it’s open source, it’s only a matter of time.
